Ik ben weer eens bezig met het redesignen van mijn portfolio (voor het oude ontwerp, kijk hier.). Deze keer ben ik gegaan voor een heel nieuw soort ontwerp en ik ben er zelf behoorlijk tevreden mee. Nu is mijn vraag dus, wat vinden jullie?
The gradient has become a lynchpin of modern web design - and in some ways, deservedly so.
As a way to spruce up flat colour, the gradient is unparalleled in terms of versatility when designing for the screen. Where flat colour on the printed page takes on the quality of the medium - glossy paper yields glossy colour, matte paper yields matte colour, etc. - flat colour on the screen has no discernable texture, no variance in lighting. And so, solid colours on the screen can be lifeless and dull. Thus, the gradient has come to the fore to give a gloss to websites everywhere.
Don't get me wrong - I think, if used correctly, the gradient tool can be a wonderful tool to add a touch of interest to a design, and to compensate for the lack of a reflective rather than an emissive medium - but unfortunately, the gradient has become a crutch to many web designers.
Dat is de enige overeenkomst met mijn site, en zelfs dan is het nog niet toepasbaar, want ik zou 2 gradients nouwelijks overuse noemen.
Ik constateer dat er vormentaal die je nu op veel plekken terug ziet, zowel bij mac als bij microsoft. De taal die menu's en headers in gradients stopt, de taal die MS Trebuchet als lettertype gebruikt, de taal die alle hoeken rond afrond. Het is prima dat je dat ook gebruikt, maar ga nou niet de orginaliteitsprijs claimen. Voor de rest is het allemaal netjes uitgewerkt hoor.
